Is Freire's idea Right? Here's my take...

Paulo Freire's idea of Education contradicts the continuous practice of traditional education which he compares to banking. He makes this comparison because a sizable number of teachers treat their students like consumers and give them close-minded teaching instead of teaching used for reality. Freire had such a strong passion for changing the education system because he was involved. Because he suffered from hunger and poverty, he lacked the motivation and power to go to school and fell behind. But later his resilience and intelligence were revealed after being hidden because of years of suffering as he passed the bar exam and became a teacher himself, leaving a positive mark in the educational system.

I had a teacher who wanted to leave a positive impact on the world, not only for positive goals in class but for our reality in the future. This teacher was Mr. Akers, my high school French teacher, who spent his time not only leaving a positive mark on everyone but also advocating for a correct and positive educational system. Mr. Akers not only had an open mind but would allow us to have a say in our education and a voice which is something Freire believed to be vital in classrooms. Not only did he practice positive teaching but cared about us as he would read books to us in the morning and even had small meditation time before the start of class to practice mindfulness. I learned to practice authentic thinking and critical thinking skills that I continue to use now in my “reality.” He was a teacher who cared, which is rare because a lot of teachers are traditional and see us as consumers and a way to deposit information, they want us to adapt without our own input. This is what Freire describes as a banking concept of education.

Now thanks to Mr. Akers, I continue to use his approach to thinking and reality in college, as learning from him was always positive because his classroom was both liberating and most importantly student-centered.
