Is Freire's theory the right theory?
The banking concept of education does sound true to me but doesn't at the same time. The true aspect is the fact that the teacher knows everything and gives the knowledge to the students expecting them to obtain that knowledge. I also believe that the teacher should have all the power in the classroom as when he states, “the teacher disciplines and the students are disciplined” (Freire 88). The teacher should be able to discipline the students and then make them the respectful students the professor wants them to be. The aspect I don't agree with is the fact that the teacher discourages the students from obtaining power in the classroom. In Freier's opinion the teacher can do anything to make the students obtain information even if it's not the most successful way to do it. This theory by Freire is very similar to our educational system due to the fact that the professor wants to provide information to the students, but still be able to teach and have power. This relates to lectures because professors talk, and talk, and talk, expecting the students to either obtain the information or ask questions if confused. The one quote I agree with from Freire is when he states, “the teacher talks, and the students listen– meekly” (Freire 88). This quote agrees with me personally because when I'm in class I listen to my professor and allow him/her to provide me information. As a student I'm supposed to obtain information by carefully listening as the professor goes on and if I don't understand I'm expected to say something.
