Reflecting on the Metamorphosis: A Journey of Figuring out What Defines Success.

This story has given me several thoughts about the meaning of success. I've always been a work hard until you achieve your goal type of person, but after reading The Metamorphosis, I believe we should let things flow and not get burnt out from so much hard work. I'm not saying success can't be achieved through hard work but overly working yourself out won't help achieve it. I feel like you have to be able to balance your personal and work life, something Gregor was unable to do. Thankfully, I have a good relationship with my family and they know their limits. Gregor’s family made him provide for them and even repay his father’s debt. A lot of families within society can have Gregor's family dynamic, especially in cultures where the man is considered the provider, or where children must pay back to their parents because they raised them.

Toward the end of section III of the story when Gregor reflects on the successes and failures of his life that no longer are important since he is an insect. The following quote showcases his thoughts about his life, “Gregor spent his nights and days almost entirely without sleeping. Sometimes he thought about taking the family’s affairs in hand again, just as he used to…” (Kafka, 212 ). This quote resonates with me as I have often found myself working hard within my career and for achievements and could have gotten burnt out like Gregor. Yet, I have realized that true success can't be defined by external markers of achievements. Unlike Gregor, we know that success shouldn't be forced or done for anyone else but ourselves. Success in close relationships requires empathy, communication, and understanding. It involves being present rather than focusing on just accomplishments or being used (in Gregor’s case).

So, I have come to understand that success is not just about individual achievements, but about the impact we have on others and the relationships we cultivate. It is about finding a balance between personal fulfillment and contributing to the world around us. Just as Gregor's transformation forced him to think about his concept of success, we should reflect on our definitions and strive to create a better understanding of what it truly means to succeed.
